Running Raspbian OS eliminated almost all of the lag. Only issue that you will still have is fast paced games such as Doom will still show a bit of lag compare to a native monitor but not very noticeable.Īdditional notes I first installed Steam Link on Retropie and it was laggy even with all of the above. I get <1ms on the network and 13ms ish on the TV so very playable. Enter the following commands to update your OS. Also many people miss-calculate the TV latency, if your TV has gaming mode you must enable it. You can get there by hitting CTRL + T or clicking the terminal icon. The key issue is latency on the network, so do not use WiFi even 5GHz (i tried it with the access point being right next to it and still had some lag). In Steam Link, limit to 1080p and also have the host PC on 1080p (if the monitor can handle higher). While the experience is not seamless and one to one, it was extremely good – definitely good enough if you have the odd PC game you’d rather play on your TV without lugging a massive tower around. The ones that made a difference was, disabling the WiFi on the Pi forcing LAN, QoS the gaming PC on the router, OC the Pi (make sure that your PSU is adequate), setup my TV to gaming mode, setup the Pi config with the correct hdmi settings (group etc) and lastly if you are using a wireless mouse have the most poll at 0 or 1 (1 in my case). From a dedicated gaming PC hooked up over Ethernet, it was a different story. A WiFi-connected laptop stuttered a little, and had some frame tearing however, similar performance is experienced on an actual Steam Link. So much so that our gameplay experience was only hampered by the computer to which we connected. We highly recommend a wired connection for this – and thanks to the Gigabit Ethernet on Raspberry Pi 4, it’s going to make a huge difference. Installing Steam Link is easy – it’s available from the Raspbian software repository so can be installed from the Terminal with a simple sudo apt install steamlink. Over the last month or so, more stable versions have been released, so we thought it was time to give it a test. With the release of Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspbian Buster, it’s taken some time to get a new version of the Steam Link app which works as well as it should. There used to be dedicated hardware for this, but it has been available for Raspberry Pi (and other hardware) for a while now. Essentially, it’s a local network streaming service that allows you to stream games from a gaming PC to another computer hooked up to a screen.
